SAM (not his real name)
13 year old boy
Sam lost his father to cancer earlier this year, leaving his mother and 3 children on their own. Sam went into his shell and acted out his grief of his father’s death. The mother had no space to grieve as she quickly took on multiple responsibilities to keep the family going. The crisis took a serious financial and emotional toll on the family. The mother is a strong woman who wanted to be self-reliant. Compassion Fund encouraged her to enroll for a hairdressing course that was of interest to her while providing them with financial assistance and grief therapy in the interim. The mother’s strength and determination has led her to complete the course and the family is relying on her income from her home based hairdressing salon.
PETER (not his real name)
12 year old boy
Peter comes from a high-risk family environment which is unable to provide him proper care and protection, making him vulnerable to neglect and abuse. From the age of 7, Peter had been truanting, stealing and trying to runaway from home; he is now temporarily staying at Kids United Home (Beyond Social Services). Peter is a very talented and good-hearted boy. He takes initiative to keep to his daily schedule and house duties at the home. Recently, he was talent-spotted to join the Sports School after he completes PSLE. With this motivation in mind, he is determined to pass. He loves soccer and hopes to play in tournaments one day. He is also a natural performer – singing & dancing. At the home he plays the role of a caring and responsible elder brother who offers help to the Primary 1 students with their schoolwork. Peter has grown to be a resilient boy with a heart to help others.
